11 Spring Dawning 671

The party headed out early and made good use of fine weather to reach the Black Lantern Castle without trouble. The Black Lantern was built on a cliff overlooking the swamplands. As time went on the cliff crumbled and the castle fell. All though most of it was destroyed a sizeable portion remain intact. The highest tower was right up against the cliff, and all the party needed to do was climb down to it.

Yrin offered to tie the rope, then would ride in a back pack carried by Kallick. Kallick invoked his spider climb ability and walked down next to Hador and Hugo.

Hador made it down safely. Then Hugo followed, has he was climbing Yrin's knot came loose and Hugo began to fall, but luckily he was at the next ledge and was able to grab it. He managed to climb the rest of the way down figuring it was no more dangerous than climbing on Yrin's rope.

On the tower they decended into it through a trap door. They found themselves in a small circular room, that opened into a hallway. In the hallway they came across a set of double doors. These doors emblemized two dragons that covered the door, with bronze art.

Yrin began to inspected it and found that it was magically trapped. Kallick to detected Magic, and was able to Identify that it was enchanted with protective magics, but it had two other schools he couldn't Identify.

Yrin set to work to disable to trap, as she did the door seemed to change and the wood became a blue crystal behind the emblems, and swirling shadows could be seen. Still she managed to open the door, much to their terror.

The shadows were in the next room and attack. Hador and Yrin tried to attack, but their mere weapons wouldn't work. The shadows attack Hador viciously, sapping his strength, and feeding off his vital energy. In a last ditch effort Hador slammed the doors shut, but the cost was severe. Now he only had the strength of a toddler, and could go on no farther.

Fearful of any other dangers the group headed back to town to find help for Hador.

10 Spring Dawning 671

The Party pressed on the entire day until they reached the small hammlet of Willow Wood. It was late when they arrived and headed straight for the Inn, the thought of a soft bed, and warm food too enticing to pass up. They discovered that the in was ran by old Corvin, and the barkeep greatly welcomed the travelers. The party paid for rooms and meals, making sure the Bob the Donkey recieved an extra helping of Oats.

Here they met Tobin, the only young man remaining after the Hobgoblin Slavers came through. He told them about how the twig blights would come and take people away in the night. And that the foul beasts had attacked Izma's place. Izma was an old alchemist "witch" who lived in a cottage at the edge of town. He also told the party that she was around when the twig blights attacked the town many years ago.

11 Spring Dawning 671

The party set out to meet Izma and find out more about the twig blights. They arrived at Izma's house, a small cottage with thick hedges all around and a large garden next to it.

As they moved up and knocked on the door, the hedges suddenly seemed to come alive as several three foot high man-like creature rushed from the hedges and attacked. Yrin found that her rapier had little effect against the inter-twined twigs that formed the creatures. But other than a few scratches the party managed to defeat all of them.

Izma was greatful and invited them all in for tea. She told them about what happened in the past when Sindirk came with the silver blades and vanquished the plague of twig blights. She told them how to get to the Black Lantern Castle. As the conversation went on, it changed to the mysterious two men who passed through going toward the black castle.

Izma identified one man as a wizard, his name Malnourn. He was a sickly man, barely able to travel far, but he traveled with a strapping bald man who helped him along. They both went into the castle... Izma indicated that even she didn't want to mess with them. The party decided to leave the next morning.

9 Spring Renewal 671

The party all began to catch their breath after the deadly fight in the jail house. Uthrok was dead, and the mysterious halfling gave Hugo a medallion saying that it would help him in the wouth-west forest. The sound of war horns could be heard shortly followed by the clash of battle. Hugo peeked his head out the door to see the hobgoblins being routed by a group of knights, Yrin recognized them as being from Havengaard.

Hador wept over the body of Thorffin, the death of an honorble warrior was always painful. As they waited in the jail house. Yrin went about searching the rooms finding a heavy chest filled with around 27,000 swords (sp). She and Kallick went about hiding it as the knights began searching other buidlings and were slowly making their way towards them. The knights greated the group with surprise not hiding their distrust of Hugo, but Hador was able to talk with them.

However one knight recognized that he carried the sword of a knight, and that since he was not a knight he wasn't allowed to carry it. Hador gave it up without a fight, although he regretted doing so. Hugo seeing that it was safe went to the stables to find Yrin's donkey and if he could locate their gear... which he did but not before a breif encounter.

Outside he discovered the men served Prince Tesrin whom tried to provoke him into a fight in Brindenford. But before Tesrin could provoke anything, Hugo also met Sir Johnathan Windimere. The good knight was Tesrin's superior and had brought the arrogant prince's men with him to help the party.

The group was invited to eat and rest with the knights. The hot food was welcome but the tension among the ranks was palpable, and the group was in a hurry to get on with Sindirk's task. As they rested, they witnessed a heated arguement between Prince Tesrin and Johnathan. To everyone's surprise Johnathan carrying the knight's sword that Hador found, approached Hador and took him as a charge. Tesrin was outraged almost to the point of challenging the senior knight for his action.

Hador was charged to give the sword (The sword of Johnathan's brother) to a person worthy of carrying it... a person worthy of knighthood. Tesrin in a fit of rage stormed off determined that Johnathan's actions were treasonous to the council. Johnathan told the party about how the knights were splintering and of how he needed Hador's help to restore the honor that was once there. He asked Hador that after he was done with Sindirk's mission if he would seek out Re'vrin Fatecaster. A reclusive wizard said to reside in the Floating Forest.

With tensions running high in the camp the group set out that morning determining that it was safer to rest away from the camp and try to reach Willow Wood the following morning.

8 Spring Renewal 671, 9 Spring Renewal 671

Knowing his friends were in danger Hugo aided by the mysterious halfling quickly made his way to the holding cells. Along the way he encountered a breif skirmish with some hobgoblins, and the halfling offered to distract the Hobgoblins while Hugo went to free his friends and the slaves.

In the cells Yrin set to work with her make shift lock pick. It took her a good time to open the lock, but she managed and crept into the hallway. Not much further down she found Hugo who was about to call the guards, as he and Kallick had devised a plan to play sick and jump the guard when he entered.

Yrin barely managed to pick the lock, but now free they began searching the jail house. Suddenly the sounds of panic could be heard as the halfling launched a barrage of fire balls on the slave wagons (which had arrived earlier than expected). Hugo made his way to the jail house, trying to sneak through the door he found himself nose to nose with the warden, but his skill was superior as he lodged an arrow in the Hobgoblin's neck.

Yrin searched a couple rooms and found an armory and equipped everyone. Hador ended up finding a sword marked with a crest of the chalice. Yrin still searching for keys to open the pens, searched the warden's room. Inside she found them next to an everburning lantern, picking up the lantern she found herself suddenly fighting a vile construct called an Iron Cobra. She lashed out at it with her rapier, dropping the keys in the process. To her dismay the weapon was useless against its iron body. Kallick stood at the doorway and blasted it, the damage he did deal was hard won against its formibible Spell Resistance. Yrin was biten and infected with a poison that drained her strength, weakened considerable she escaped. Hador moved in using his new sword found that the blade easily chopped the snakes body, and the brief fight left Hador injured slightly and the cobra dead.

Hugo positioned himself to guard the southern door, where three hobgoblins rushed in to stop the escape. The rushed Hugo too quickly to make use of his bow so he fell back to team up with Thorffin. The hobgoblins pursued and engaged in a furious fight. Thorffin fell in battle, having been injured the night before. Ank'ra fell shortly after unable to defend from multiple attackers. Kallick had much trouble aiming inside the melee, and his blasts ended Hadran's life and blasted Hugo's sword free in one instance.

Still they managed to drop all but two hobgoblins, before Hugo was fataly wounded and bleeding to death on the ground. Yrin rushed in intent on using her new spell stealing ability she took Ank'ra's healing power, but before she could use it the Hobgoblin Sergeant fell her. Hador rushed up from behind watched suddenly as the remaining Hobgoblin turned and struck down his own Sergeant.

The hobgoblin turned out to be Torgraad, who returned to repay his debt of honor to Yrin for sparring his life. He gave her a potent healing potion, bringing her to conciousness. His debt paid Torgraad and Hador squared off, since Torgraad obviously had no concern for the rest of the party. But Hador was faced with a dilemma, fight Torgraad and make true his promise or save Hugo and Ank'ra who were hanging on deaths door. Torgraad told them where some healing supplies were. Still doubtful of Torgraad Hador suddenly pummeled the hobgoblin unconcious and threw him into one of the cells.

The healing precess was rather quick, but unable to read what potions were what, Kallick and Yrin proceeded to heal Ank'ra and Hugo...however Hugo found himself protected from good for a little while. Now awake, they started setting the other slaves free, as well as confirmed Thorffin's passing to Moradin. Of the freed slave they met a man named Jastill a rather large warrior who offered to help them escape, which everyone readily accepted considering their wounds.

They made ready their escape, Hugo checked to see if the outside was clear, but found that a squad of well equipped hobgoblins were approaching the building lead by Urthok the Vicious, leader of the slavers. Hugo fell back to a defensive position where he found the mysterious halfling who offered his assistance and the rest took up other spots ready to draw and flank the hobgoblins. They were taken a little by surprise as Urthok's wizard advisor used ghost sound to fool the group and get close. Hador and Kallick engaged spear-goblins at another door. Urthok spot, under the effects of haste rushed to the south door and entered the jail house intent on routing the slaves. Enlarged by his advisor things looked bleak, that was until the halfling assisting Hugo struck the leader with a hold person spell. The advisor seeing his life in jeapordy turned invisible and ran. Left helpless a coup de gras ended Urhtok's life.

As the group recovered wondering about the number of remaining hobgoblin's a war horn sounded outside the walls... it didn't sound like a Hobgoblin horn...

8 Spring Renewal 671

The party quickly looted the bodies of the hobgoblins and moved the 1 remaining into the cave intending to interrogate him. While the group discussed how to question their prisoner, Hugo climbed on top of the mound over the cave and stood lookout where he spotted another hobgoblin fleeing down the road. He thought to give chase, but the escapee was well off and leaving the group would be particularlly dangerous. His warning ended the groups arguement about how to proceed.

While the rest of the group packed their gear, Thorffin managed to revive the hobgoblin enough to allow Yrin to begin questioning him. The viciousness in which Yrin began troubled Thorffin, her bluffing skills convincing the cleric she was going to be as cruel as them. Wrestling with what he should do Thorffin left the cave for some fresh air.

Torgraad, the hobgoblin told Yrin and the group that a legion of troops were in the area and were collecting slaves to take north to Grothram. In order to find the encampment Torgraad was offered his life in exchange to be a guide to the ruins where the Hobgoblin's made their base.

Torgraad lead them in a direction lead them for many miles over flat country. Before the group knew what happened a volley of Alchemical sleeping gas was launched from an ambush. Kallick, Hador, as well as their pack animal went down instantly. Suddenly a group of hobgoblin warriors seemingly materialized out of thin air and attacked. They were much more organized, using bolas, and nets along with spears and a phalanx style fighting that spoke of organzied military training. The battle was fierce as the moved in and put Thorffin, and Yrin out of commition using bolas, and poisoned tipped spears. Ank'ra faught hard calling on the spirits to entangle the hobgoblins, but they were determined and bulled through the plants. After suffering grievious wounds in the conflict and seeing her allies lives in danger she asked the spirits to call off their protection, and surrendered. The group was then shackled and taken to the ruins. The hobgoblins had nearly killed Thorffin in the fight and were planning to kill the dwarf, but Hador now concious was able to carry the dwarf all the way to the ruins knowing that if he failed the hobgoblins would kill the dwarf once he touched the ground.

In the cell Hador met a man named Hadran who offered to tend to the unconcious dwarf and Kallick who seemed to have suffered worse than the others from the mysterious sleeping gas. He was from Willow Wood and spoke of the happenings there and how he was trying to flee the strange things brought about by the dark traveler. Yrin and Ank'ra found another young woman in their cell and discovered that the slaves were being taken for a variety of reasons... pit fighting, hard labor, pleasure and that time was short before another wagon would arrive to ship them off to the hobgoblin city. Yrin quickly decided to start finding a way to escape.

Hugo had been out hunting well ahead of the group and missed the magically hidden group of slavers. He ran back to aid, but by the time he arrived he knew that fighting was useless. As Ank'ra surrendered, Hugo hid and tracked the hobgoblins thinking it wiser to help them escape. As he stalked the ruin walls for a way in, Hugo spotted another figure trying to get in as well. Hugo followed him and found a deadly and mysterious halfling, who agreed that they had the same interests and would benefit from working together.

With plans to escape and slaves to free the six team party looks to be in a tough postion... we'll see what they will make of the hobgoblins and the situation in Willow Wood.

6 Spring Renewal 671

The trio traveled until the next night fall and stopped to rest. But the next day they found that the knight's health was not improving so they pushed on until they reached Sternfall. During the evening Sternfall locked it's gates tight and allowed no entry under any circumstances, much to Hador's frustration. As they soon found a beer tent set up outside by some traveling merchants. As they began to discuss the next course of action Yrin started asking people waiting outside the gate if they could offer any assistance. This is where she met Kallick, who introduced her to his homemade brew... which tasted like alcohol and dirt.

Hugo and Hador's conversation about the knight drew the attention of two others waiting outside the gate. One was Thorffin, a dwarf cleric of Moradin who readily offered his healing abilities to help the knight. It took more effort than he first realized, but the blessings of Moradin brought the Knight back to conciousness, although barely. The knight still in considerable pain was then assisted by Ank'ra. The half-orc woman was able to ask the spirits around her to ease the knight's injuries, and they did.

They found out that the knight's name was Johnnathan Windimere a Knight Protector. Hador immediately recognized the man's family as one of the few who openly spoke of corruption among the High Council of Havengaard. Johnnathan told them about hobgoblins who have been taking slaves in the area. He also spoke of his displeasure about the council being too slow to assist the innocent and left to help the people without the council's consent. But working alone was difficult and Johnnathan could not cover such a large area alone.

Hador asked about searching the lands south of Sternfall, and found out that Johnnathan hadn't searched there yet. Hador and Hugo both decided to check the area since they were headed that way Yrin they knew would help. Ank'ra and Thorffin readily agreed to assist the trio, much to the thankfulness of Johnnathan, and Kallick figured searching with the group my help his own interests, plus Johnnathan offered some kind of reward for any assistance. With a decided course of action the group planned to leave the next day after selling off the weapons and armor from the 6 hobgoblins encountered before reaching Sternfall.

7 Spring Renewal 671

With the assistance of Johnnathan Yrin, Kallick, Hador, and Ank'ra were able to speed up the lengthy process to enter the Gates of Sternfall. Yrin purposefully needed to enter to sell the loot and replenish supplies for the trip to Black Lantern Castle. Aside from some mild resentment towards Ank'ra for her orcish blood everything went smoothly

Meanwhile Hugo and Thorffin passed their time outside the gates maintaining their gear. Not long into mid-morning they saw a group of peasent pulling a cart to Sternfall, loaded in the back of the cart was the corpse of a boy in his mid-teens. Thorffin approached to offer any assistance to the grieving people, while Hugo listened.

The boy was apparently killed while chasing some hobgoblin slavers into the woods. The peasant man said that the woods came alive and killed both the hobgoblins and his son. Apparently the boy had died of some kind of poisoning, but the peasant man wasn't sure. He also mentioned something about a dark man who visited and said he would help them get rid of the slavers. The peasant man said "The old man scared Ashma, and I've never thought anyone could scare Ashma. She is able to make all those potions and stuff." After that they headed to the gates to have their son buried with the blessings of Pelor.

When the rest of the party returned Thorffin and Hugo relayed their encounter to them. Hador seemed to recall Sindirk saying something about little thorn creatures, and the old dwarf helping destroy an evil tree. With this somewhat confirming peice of information the party packed their gear and set out immediately.

Travel was swift and easy, but as the day moved on thick clouds began to form and threaten rain. Thankfully Hugo's knowledge of the area allowed him to find an abandoned bear cave and camp safely and dry after the clouds finally broke.

8 Spring Renewal 671

The next morning did not easy the rain and as Hugo stepped out of the cave to check the weather an arrow struck the cave wall near his head. He ducked back inside and soon the party found themselves under attack by a small gang of 5 hobgoblins. The party made short work of them, Kallick using his eldritch blasts, and Thorffin skewering one with a powerful charge. After the fighting ended, they were able to keep one from dying... it looks like an interrogation will be in order...

Saturday 23 July 2005

1 Spring Renewal 671

After the incident with Prince Tesrin, the trio decided it was prudent to leave as soon as possible. Sindirk supplied a few supplies for them, which they packed onto Yrin's donkey and quickly headed out along the west road through the central mountains towards Sternfall.

It wasn't long into the journey that they were accosted by a pair of bandits who mistaken them for traveling peasants. Hugo and Yrin opened fire with bow and crossbow, while Hador made short work of them with his sword.

5 Spring Renewal 671

After 3 days of easy travel the trio found themselves exiting the mountains and entering the lower foothills. As they crested a hill at the base of the mountains, Hugo's keen eyes spotted sunlight glinting off of sword and armor, and soon Yrin and Hador could here the clash of a battle. Considering the fighting was along their route, they hurried their way to where they saw a lone man dressed in half-plate fighting six hobgoblin warriors.

By the time they reached the fight the armored man had killed three, but suffered a grevieous wound. They sprung to the aid of the knight but not before he suffered another deadly blow. Defeating the last pair of hobgoblins, they luckily were able to stabilze the dying man leaving him dangling on deaths door.

They discovered he was defending a small wagon who's owners had fled during the conflict. Clearing out the contents, the three loaded the armored man onto the wagon and headed off to Sternfall and hopefully to seek aid...

Saturday 16 July 2005

The game went great... alot of good role playing, only 1 die was rolled the whole game... Yrin (played by Geekling) had to roll a spot check (17).

1 First Month, Spring Renewal 671

Our game began when the PCs answered the call of their old friend Sindrik (Dwarf Male Ftr 7/ Expert 3). He had requested they visit him at his tavern in Brindenford to discuss some problems they were having in the town. Sindirk seeing the potential in each of the young people before him decided to have them work together to ensure they accomplish what he hired them to do. They agreed to explore an old castle south of Strenfall. Sindirk had plundered the castle in his younger days and said he destroyed an evil tree that grew in the depths of the castle basement.

This tree he said was capable of entrancing victims and luring them into its clutches. It would absorb people into its trunk and horribly transmute them into "twigblights". He thinks the strange sickness that has befallen Brindenford might be evidence that the tree has regrown, dispite the fact his old wizrd companion burned it completely.

Before leaving Sindirk allowed the small trio to enjoy at least 1 day of the new year festival. But the enjoyment was short lived, the half-orc ranger was the target of insults by the arrogant Prince Tesrin of Havengaard. Hador, the desposed knight stepped to his new companions defense only to be recognized as the murderer of Tesrin's cousin. Thanfully Yrin stepped in and whisked away her group before the confrontation turned violent. Now it looks like getting out of town for a while looks good to everyone.
